Design a Sliding Wardrobe That Fits Your Opening
Get a custom sliding door wardrobe designed around your room, storage needs and preferred style.
A sliding door wardrobe uses panels that run along a track instead of doors that swing outwards, so it needs no clearance in front of the wardrobe. That single difference is why sliding doors are the most common choice for Sydney bedrooms where the bed, a walkway or a second doorway sits close to the wardrobe wall.
Sultan’s Wardrobes makes sliding wardrobes to the measured size of your opening rather than to standard modular widths. Panels can be mirrored, glass, melamine or woodgrain, set in an aluminium frame, and run floor to ceiling where the room allows.
Sliding doors are one of the door systems available on our custom built-in wardrobes. Behind the doors, the internal layout is configured the same way – hanging, shelving, drawers and shoe storage divided to suit what you need to store.
With more than 20 years specialising in wardrobes, Sultan’s Wardrobes provides a free in-home measure and quote and works directly with Sydney homeowners from design through to installation.

Sliding doors are made from a panel set into an aluminium frame. The panel decides how the wardrobe looks; the frame and track decide how it runs.
Full-height mirrors that reflect light and remove the need for a separate mirror.
Coloured or back-painted glass for a flat, contemporary finish.
Solid colours and timber looks that match the rest of the room’s joinery.
Aluminium frames in a range of finishes, from slimline profiles to bolder edges.
Taller panels that close off the gap above the wardrobe entirely.
Combine mirror with a solid or woodgrain panel across the door set.

Save Space With Sliding Wardrobes
Get practical storage without doors swinging into the room – ideal for bedrooms with limited clearance.
Sliding doors overlap, so you can never see the whole wardrobe at once. The number of panels decides how much of the opening you can reach at any one time, and how wide each door is to move.
| Opening Width | Usual Panel Count | Access at Once |
|---|---|---|
| Up to approximately 1.8m | 2 doors | Half the opening |
| Approximately 1.8m – 2.7m | 2 or 3 doors | Half to two-thirds |
| Approximately 2.7m – 3.6m | 3 doors | Two-thirds |
| Over approximately 3.6m | 4 doors | Half, in two openings |
Individual panels usually sit between 600mm and 1200mm wide. Wider panels mean fewer frame lines across the wardrobe, but a heavier door to move.
| Sliding | Hinged | |
|---|---|---|
| Clearance needed in front | None | Approximately 600mm |
| Access to the opening | Part of it at a time | All of it at once |
| Depth used by the doors | Approximately 80-100mm | Minimal |
| Full-height mirrors | Straightforward | Possible, heavier on hinges |
| Best suited to | Tight bedrooms, walkways | Rooms with space to swing |
Where clearance allows, hinged doors give you the full opening at once. Where it doesn’t, sliding is usually the practical answer.
These figures are a general guide. The panel count and door widths for your wardrobe are confirmed at the in-home measure.
Made-to-measure sliding doors are cut to the opening you have, so the track runs the full width and there are no filler panels or gaps at the ends. This is particularly useful for:
Uneven walls matter more with sliding doors than with hinged ones, because the doors have to run true along the full width of the opening. Where a wall is out of square, the frame is packed and scribed at installation so the panels close cleanly against the ends.

Because only part of the opening is visible at a time, the internal layout matters more in a sliding wardrobe than in a hinged one.
Drawers are usually placed so they don’t sit directly behind a door overlap, and everyday items are kept in the sections you open most often.
| Wardrobe Internal | Best For |
|---|---|
| Double Hanging | Shirts, jackets, skirts and folded trousers |
| Full-Length Hanging | Dresses, coats and longer garments |
| Adjustable Shelving | Folded clothing, bags and linen |
| Drawer Units | Underwear, accessories and small items |
| Shoe Storage | Footwear kept organised and accessible |
| Overhead Storage | Suitcases, bedding and seasonal items |

Your Space. Your Storage. Your Wardrobe.
Choose the doors, panels, finishes and internals that suit your room and the way you use it.
Sliding doors are the usual choice in Sydney apartments, where bedrooms are often sized so that a hinged door would open into the bed or the walkway.
Sultan’s Wardrobes designs and installs sliding wardrobes in apartments and strata buildings as well as houses. Mirrored panels are common in apartment bedrooms because they add depth to a smaller room without taking up any wall space.
Apartment installations may require planning around:
Sliding door panels are delivered in one piece, so lift size and stairwell access are worth mentioning when you book, particularly for floor-to-ceiling doors in older buildings.
Usually not. A wardrobe fitted inside an apartment is generally considered cosmetic work in NSW. There’s more on strata and approvals on our built-in wardrobes page, and it’s worth checking your building’s by-laws either way.

Built Around Your Space
Create a custom sliding wardrobe that fits your room, storage needs and preferred style.
As a guide, openings up to about 1.8m usually take two doors, openings between about 1.8m and 3.6m take two or three, and anything wider generally takes four.
Individual panels normally sit between 600mm and 1200mm wide. More doors means narrower, lighter panels; fewer doors means fewer frame lines across the wardrobe.
None. Sliding doors run within the wardrobe frame rather than swinging outwards, so a bed, walkway or doorway can sit directly in front. Hinged doors by comparison generally need around 600mm of clear space to open.
Slightly. The track and door panels generally take up around 80-100mm at the front of the wardrobe, so the usable internal depth is a little less than the overall depth. We allow for this when setting out the internals so hanging still has enough clearance.
It depends on the room rather than the doors. Sliding doors need no clearance in front, which suits tight bedrooms and apartments, but you only ever see part of the opening at once.
Hinged doors give you the full opening at a glance and use less depth, but need room to swing. We’ll talk through both at the measure.
Approximately 2-6 weeks from final approval to installation, with installation usually completed in one day.
In many cases yes, provided the opening is sound, reasonably square and deep enough to take the track. We’ll check the existing frame, floor and ceiling at the measure and let you know whether new doors alone will work or whether the surround needs attention as well.
Yes. Sultan’s Wardrobes can work with uneven walls, alcoves, bulkheads and non-square openings. Sliding doors need a level track and a true opening to run properly, so the frame is packed and scribed during installation. Raked ceilings are handled by setting the door height below the slope and using the space above for storage.
Most issues come from dust and lint building up in the bottom track. Vacuuming the track occasionally is usually all that’s needed. Rollers are adjustable, so if a door starts to sit unevenly it can generally be brought back into alignment rather than replaced.
Yes. Removal and disposal of existing wardrobes and doors can be arranged as part of the installation. Mention it when booking your measure so it can be assessed and included in your quote.
Yes. Sultan’s Wardrobes installs sliding wardrobes in apartments as well as houses. Apartment projects may require additional planning around parking, lift access, loading and building rules, particularly for full-height door panels.
Sliding wardrobes are covered by a 10-year warranty on workmanship and wardrobe components.
Soft-close door brakes and drawer systems are available as an upgrade. They are not included as standard.
