How Much Clearance Do Hinged Wardrobe Doors Need?
A hinged door needs roughly its own width in clear floor space to open fully. That means the door width is the number that decides whether hinged doors will work in your room – not the width of the wardrobe.

Doors are generally kept at or under 600mm wide. Beyond that the door becomes heavy on its hinges and needs more room to swing.

If space in front is tight, more doors at a narrower width will reduce the swing needed. A row of 400mm doors opens in half the space a 800mm door would.

Hinged Wardrobes Designed Around Your Space
Hinged doors are made as individual panels, so they can follow the shape of a room in ways a single sliding track cannot. This is particularly useful for:
- corner and return wardrobes
- walls that step or change depth
- sloped and raked ceilings
- alcoves and recessed spaces
- floor-to-ceiling storage
- bulkheads above the opening
- uneven or non-flush walls
- separate overhead doors
Uneven walls are more forgiving with hinged doors than with sliding ones, because each door is hung and adjusted separately rather than having to run true along a single track. Where a wall is out of square, the cabinet is scribed to the wall and the hinges are adjusted so the door gaps stay even across the run.
Hinged doors also leave the front of the wardrobe clear, so the full internal depth stays usable and the inside face of each door can carry a mirror, hooks or a tie rack.

Hinged wardrobes work well in apartments where the bedroom has clear floor space in front of the wardrobe wall, or where the wardrobe sits in an alcove or turns a corner.
Where the bed or a walkway runs close to the wardrobe, narrower doors are often the answer – a run of 400mm doors needs far less swing than a pair of wide ones. Where there is no clear space at all, sliding doors are the better option, and we’ll say so at the measure.
Hinged doors are also the only option that turns a corner, so an apartment bedroom with a wall that returns can often take a larger wardrobe than it first appears.

How much clearance do hinged wardrobe doors need?
Roughly the width of the door. A 600mm door needs about 600mm of clear floor in front to open fully; a 400mm door needs about 400mm. If space is tight, using more doors at a narrower width reduces the swing required without changing the wardrobe itself.
How wide should hinged wardrobe doors be?
Most hinged wardrobe doors sit between 400mm and 600mm wide. Beyond about 600mm the door becomes heavy on its hinges, is more likely to sag over time, and needs more room to swing clear.
How many hinges does a wardrobe door need?
It depends on door height and weight. As a guide, doors up to about 900mm use two hinges, 900-1600mm use three, 1600-2000mm use four, and taller doors use five. Mirrored and glass doors are heavier, so they often take an extra hinge for the same height.
Are hinged or sliding wardrobe doors better?
It depends on the room. Hinged doors open the full width at once, keep the entire cabinet depth usable and let you fit mirrors or hooks to the inside of the door, but they need clear floor space to swing.
Sliding doors need no clearance at all, which is why they suit tight bedrooms, but you only ever see part of the opening at a time. We’ll talk through both at the measure.
How long does a hinged wardrobe take?
Approximately 2-6 weeks from final approval to installation, with installation usually completed in one day.
Can you replace the doors on an existing wardrobe?
Often yes, provided the existing carcass is sound and square enough to hang new doors on.
We’ll check the cabinet, the hinge positions and the wall at the measure and let you know whether new doors alone will work or whether the wardrobe is better replaced.
Can you build hinged wardrobes around sloped ceilings or uneven walls?
Yes, and hinged doors are generally more forgiving here than sliding ones.
Each door is hung and adjusted separately rather than running along a shared track, so the cabinet can be scribed to an uneven wall and the door gaps still kept even.
Raked ceilings are handled by setting door heights to follow the slope or using a separate overhead section.
Do hinged wardrobe doors need adjusting over time?
Occasionally. Concealed hinges adjust in three directions using the screws on the hinge itself, so a door that has drifted out of line can be brought back without removing anything.
There is no track to keep clean, which is one less thing to maintain.
Do you remove old wardrobes?
Yes. Removal and disposal of existing wardrobes and doors can be arranged as part of the installation. Mention it when booking your measure so it can be assessed and included in your quote.
What is the standard depth of a hinged wardrobe?
Sultan’s Wardrobes typically builds wardrobes approximately 600-650mm deep, which allows adult clothing to hang square on standard hangers.
Because hinged doors sit outside the cabinet, that full depth stays usable. Custom depths are also possible where required.

Is soft-close included?
Soft-close hinges and drawers are available as an upgrade. They are not included as standard.
